Wie set to retire?

A BBC article reporting that Michelle Wie will never regain full fitness because of the wrist problems that have caused her to pull out of recent tournaments has fuelled debates whether the 19-year-old is set for a very early retirement.

The American has enjoyed a very successful start to her career, and has even competed in men's events. 2007 was a complete wipe out as she suffered recurrences of a problematic wrist injury.

A BBC forum shows how some people have reacted to the news that Wie might never be the same again. There are some great posts, and it goes to show how useful utilising the digital newsroom can really be.

One comment reads: "Over hyped, over marketed, overconfident, overpaid...........but mainly over par."

Most of the posts reflect how Wie's parents have pushed her too hard, and so she has been ill advised and exploited.

Whatever you believe, it is a sad story. After all, she is just nineteen, yet the spotlight seems like it has been on her for a lot longer.

A blog post on Worldgolf.com is titled "Top 7 Reasons Why Michelle Wie Will Never Be Number One." It is a very interesting read, and raises many good points.

Forget Poulter, Scott is the man to challenge Woods

So after all, it's not Ian Poulter who is Tiger's main challenger. It is in fact, someone who I failed to mention in my poll, a certain Adam Scott who can challenge Tiger over the next five years.

This is all according to his coach, Butch Harmon, who is of course Tiger Woods' former coach.

A report from The Australian reveals how Harmon said:

"Adam Scott is the best player under 30 in the world by far,"

"You may get an argument for Luke Donald or Sergio Garcia but I just think Adam Scott is above them. He's a truly great talent.

"He's the only one I see of the young players with all the things it takes to get close to Tiger Woods."

On the other hand, a post from the Grouchy Golf Blog plays down Scott's chances. The writer claims that Scott hasn't got the short game or putting skills to match Tiger.

A really good addition to this post is how they have uploaded a video, comparing the swings of the two golfers. Its a really good example of how this blog is using the digital newsroom to great effect.

Ian Poulter - the new Tiger?

As explained in my last post, my golfing capabilities are not quite up to Tiger's standard just yet. Perhaps I am being a little harsh on myself, as there are not too many professional golfers that can boast the same level of ability as the great man himself.

That is of course apart from a certain Ian Poulter, who in the March edition of Golf World claims that he will be Tiger's closest rival once he reaches his full potential. For a man ranked number 22 in the world, he clearly has his work cut out.

We are accustomed to seeing Poulter dressed in highly controversial attire on the golf course, but this latest show of flamboyance is sure to shock and entertain the golf community. Tiger Woods is building up a reputation as one of the finest golfers ever to have graced the game, winning 13 majors and 85 career titles. Comparing this feet to Ian Poulter's seven tournament victories and it is evident the the Englishman's claim has no foundation.

Perhaps Poulter is using mind games to gain an advantage over fellow competitors. Can anyone actually catch Tiger Woods?

Vote now on my poll.

Starting Out...Golf: a summer sport?

I am starting this blog for my JN2053 Module- The Digital Newsroom. The blog will focus on golf.

To me, golf is something that interests me when the football season is over, the sun is shining, and my skin is of a pale shade. There's nothing quite like a summer's day stroll around a golf course. The moment it gets a little chilly, however, I revert back to football.
I'm a fairly decent golfer, and could hold my own on a 16 handicap. I can drive a ball pretty straight, and have been known to reach the 300 yard marker on occasion.
The problem is simply, consistency. It's the typical golfer's problem, 2 shots perfect, 1 shot fluffed. The potential is there, but I'm not quite at Tiger's level just yet.

Doing a sports journalism degree, it is key to have more than one sport to call upon. I am an avid Spurs fan, and am very passionate about football. But I have always been interested in other sports such as golf, along with cricket, tennis, badminton, snooker, and more recently futsal.

However, I need to broaden my horizons, and start to extend my knowledge of these sports further. Hopefully this blog will enable me to investigate and explore the wonderful world of golf and all its glory.
